Standard Tavern
About This Spot
Stepping into Standard Tavern feels like entering a familiar nook in the heart of Portland’s Buckman-Kerns neighborhood—a lively yet unpretentious dive bar where the hum of conversations blends with the casual clack of pool cues. The atmosphere is relaxed and easygoing, where folks from all walks of life gather in the same space, making it a genuine community spot rather than just another bar on the map.
The pace here is unhurried, the kind of place where time seems measured more by rounds of drinks shared than by the ticking clock. The interior carries the charm of well-worn green felt on pool tables, a quirky lineup of arcade and video poker machines, and a modest patio that invites a breath of fresh air when the night is warm. It’s a space that encourages both lively conversation and comfortable silences among friends.
Drinks hold a special place in the experience—whether it’s a nostalgic sip of Hamm’s on a Wednesday night, a brisk double of Four Roses whiskey, or one of the creatively playful JellO shots dusted with pop rocks that add a spark of childhood whimsy to the evening. Seasonal slushies and surprisingly nuanced seltzer selections complement the lineup, ensuring there’s something approachable and fun for everyone at the bar. And while the menu isn’t about lavish plates, small bites that accompany your drink—like a plate of golden tots or a humble serving of nachos—feel just right here.
What truly sets Standard Tavern apart is the feeling of connection fostered by its staff and patrons alike. The bartenders know the rhythm of the room and can effortlessly anticipate what their regulars desire, creating spaces for conversations as much as for clinking glasses. It’s the kind of place where new and old friendships strike up over a game of pool or a shared laugh, embodying the imperfect, enduring spirit of a neighborhood favorite.

Great bar with good beer and staff. Unfortunately the pool is not for swimming but the game with the green felt table smh. Next time I won’t wear my swimming trunks.

My favorite Buckman-Kerns dive bar. The clientele is a wonderful mix of anybody and everybody. The only bummer for me is that the patio is pretty small, so if you're a nonsmoker, there's no escape.

Best Jell-O shots in Portland the pop rocks on top is the crack of the candy world. Jessica is such a great bartender who knows what you want even before you do. Dive bars may be dying in this town but this one will live on forever as the place with 1$ Hamms on Wednesday’s.

I came here with a couple of coworkers. We were visiting out of state on a work trip and a friend of a friend recommended The Standard. It is your typical dive bar. No fancy frills but nothing but fun! A variety of good music was playing in the background. People were playing pool. The crowd was a mix of ages and different walks of life. It made for a good time. The pop rock Jell-O shots were the surprising underdog of the night! It was like a party in your mouth. Our bartender Devon was amazing! He was attentive and engaged in conversation. The owner Reed was working hard behind the bar too. He was really nice and made sure we were well taken care of. It was fun getting to know him. Today happened to be his 18th anniversary of opening The Standard! What a milestone to be proud of. If you’re looking for a laid back judgement free zone with strong drinks, good times and hard working bartenders… then The Standard is the spot. From Arizona, wishing Reed another 18 years of success. (PS… #DaBears)

Mama Jess is the best! Good dive bar, pool tables, video poker, fun vending machine, inexpensive drinks. Grab a burrito or sandwich from across the street and enjoy it here!

Very chill! Came in around 4PM on a Friday. Been here a few times with my sweethearts always good music, fav atmosphere. Super big thank you for having tea (which they got TODAY!) right at the beginning of the year for us with that sober start goal for the year but still want to enjoy the bar! Love playing pinball here and last time I stuck $20 in the video lottery I won’t $180 which was a fun time. The Standard is awesome.

Fun neighborhood watering hole. Great for large groups too. We came in on a wknd evening and were able to find a table. Service is easy we just ordered at bar. They also have fun jello shots with pop rocks! Hope that's still there.

Great dive bar with cheap drinks, pool tables, and a big outdoor patio. I don't really like jello shots, but they have pop rocks on theirs, which makes it fun. They highly encourage outside food!
